Els components del grup artístic format al sanggar Suara Kanti es preparen abans d’interpretar les danses Barong i Kris. Al vídeo veiem com s’abillen i es maquillen darrere l’escenari del Museu de les Arts Agung Rai (ARMA), a Pengosekan, als afores meridionals d’Ubud. Els membres del grup provenen del vilatge Abasan, a prop de Singapadu, a uns vuit quilòmetres al sud d’Ubud. El grup d’Abasan és conegut per l’excel·lència del seu treball. Mentre els veiem vestir-se i maquillar-se proposo que ens fixem com parlen. És evident que si no sou balinesos no entendreu una sola paraula, però val la pena escoltar-los. És interessant que pareu atenció, els sons que sentireu no romandran per gaire temps al planeta. Com tantes altres llengües, el balinès és una música que s’apaga. Aquesta que veiem probablement és de les darreres generacions que tindrà per llengua habitual el balinès. Fora de casa, molts dels fills d’aquests homes ja parlen més en indonesi que en la llengua dels avis. El balinès s’està perdent, entre d’altres raons perquè l’ensenyament que se’n fa a l’escola és de fireta, per tancar la boca els que ho reclamen i para de comptar. La política lingüística de Jakarta té com a finalitat reduir o liquidar les altres llengües que no siguin l’indonesi. Moltíssimes de les dotzenes de llengües que es parlen a l’arxipèlag ja són residuals. El balinès ha entrat en fase agònica. Sempre que vaig a Bali m’entristeixo quan m’adono que cada vegada el balinès es parla menys. Recula a passes gegantines. El govern indonesi ha aconseguit bandejar-lo i desprestigiar-lo. Un menyspreu que es fomenta cada dia. Els joves que encara el parlen, i molts adults, el barregen amb cabassos de paraules indonèsies. La gran majoria de balinesos no són conscients del què comportarà perdre la llengua. Bona part dels estrangers que viuen a Bali -o hi van sovint- parlen indonesi o l’aprenen. N’hi ha poquíssims que s’interessin pel balinès, que s’hi expressin o l’entenguin. Són una excepció els que l’estudien. Una minoria ínfima. No sé si els forasters que visquent a Bali parlen indonesi s’adonen de la seva complicitat amb el genocidi lingüístic que perpetra a consciència el govern de Jakarta. El bo del cas és que molts d’aquests estrangers manifesten que viuen a Bali perquè l’estimen. Estimar un país és estimar-ne l’ànima. La cultura i la tradició són els pilars que es fonamenten en l’ànima. L’ànima viu en l’expressió. És l’arquitectura del concepte: la llengua.

The group from sanggar Suara Kanti are getting ready before performing Barong and Kris dances. They dress and make up behind the stage of Agung Rai Museum of Arts, in Pengosekan, Ubud. The group comes from the village of Abasan, close to Singapadu, a few km south of Ubud. Throughout the island they are well known for the excellence of their work. We have the chance to see the artists while preparing the performance. Maybe even more interesting than watching is to listen them talking in the Balinese language. Nowadays Balinese is fading little by little. The language of the island is vanishing faster than their tradition and dances. In some way their tradition and dances are supported by tourism but not so the language. Foreigners come to Bali to experience the difference. Unfortunatley only the visual differences. Most foreigners visiting Bali don’t care about what is behind the scenes. They come attracted by the beauty of the island and the colourful religious ceremonies. Few come to Bali with deeper interest. Language is the house where the soul lives. If the soul shelter is spoiled we’ll loose the spirit and the heritage left to us by our ancestors. By neglecting the heritage we also neglect the forefathers’ memory. Most foreigners living in Bali, or coming often to the island, don’t care about the most essential part of its culture: the language. By talking to and addressing to Balinese people in Bahasa Indonesia they fail to respect the essence of Bali. These foreigners support those willing to convert the island into a huge theme park for tourists, people who want to convert Bali into a gorgeous scenario without a soul. The artists we see on the video speak Balinese but sometimes they include some words in Bahasa Indonesia. Balinese is not seriously taught in the schools on the island. That’s why many young Balinese speak Indonesian among themselves, specially in Denpasar and other towns scattered around the island. It’s sad but is true. Please help the culture of Bali and respect it fully. Don’t forget the backstage, it is like the unseen kitchen where the most delicious, creative and genuine food is cooked. And it is where the hot coals are.
